Cardamom & Cinnamon
At first, these look like very basic and somewhat boring (mini) cupcakes. But the combination of cardamom and cinnamon in a vanilla cupcake is unusual and very tasty – you get the cinnamon first, cardamom second, for a not-unlike pleasing chai flavor. They’re topped with vanilla buttercream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
I love experimenting with flavors. These were for a housewarming, and the conversation went like this: No chocolate or nuts. No chocolate? Really? Maybe something southeast-Asian themed? Hm. Cardamom? Seems like a winner. I did do Thai-flavored once, with galangal, chili, and kaffir lime, is curry next?
